Tour a nearby military facility, and explore a range of state policy option concerning the sustainability of military installations. Hear about state programs to help service members transition back to civilian life including housing and education and employment opportunities for veterans with disabilities. Receive an update on the Department of Defense budget and possible base realignment and closure.

Combating Hunger:  Feeding Our Military Families and Veterans (Off-Site Lunch and Presentation)
(Joint with the NCSL Hunger Partnership)

Learn about efforts to address economic hardship among America's returning veterans and their families. What are the challenges for this population? What are strategies to increase participation among eligible military families and veterans in hunger relief programs?  How can effective public-private partnerships make budgets stretch to put food on the table, especially in this holiday season?  

Lunch will be hosted at the National Restaurant Association's beautiful new rooftop event space at 2055 L Street NW, Washington, D.C.

If you plan to attend the tour, you must provide your name to NCSL staff and as it appears on your government issued ID by December 2. Bring the same government issued ID with you on the tour. While chair of the National Governors Association in 2012-2013, Delaware Governor Jack Markell presided over an initiative to advance employment opportunities for individuals with significant disabilities that culminated in the report, A Better Bottom Line:  Employing People with Disabilities. Hear from one of the report's co-authors sharing steps that states can take to promote the hiring and retention of people with disabilities and veterans in particular.
